Member Responsibilities

Speed skating is a family-oriented, volunteer-driven sport.  We require that our members participate to keep the club viable and running:

The Langley Blades Club is required to fundraise throughout the season to pay for ice times, coaching fees and equipment replacement/maintenance.  Member fees do not cover the entire cost of running the club from season to season.  Besides Langley City and BC Government grants, we also rely on fundraising efforts.  We expect our members to participate in four main fundraisers throughout the year:

1 - Bottle drive: Members are expected to participate in a bottle drive that takes place on a Saturday in September.

2 - Langley Blades Interclub Meet: Members and their parents are expected to contribute to the interclub meet via volunteering - this takes many forms including 50/50 tickets, raffle prize draws, on- and off-ice help.

3- Skate-a-thon: Members will skate as many laps as they can in 15 minutes.  They are asked to seek pledges from family, friends and community in the form of set donation or pledges per lap.

4- Pub Night: This is a fun night for 'old-enough' members and parents!  For $10, a participant gets a burger, salad or fries, drink.  There is a prize raffle and 50/50 tickets.

The Langley Blades also offers a Corporate Sponsorship Program - see the link in the left menu for further details.  All donations to the club are tax deductable and a receipt provided by Speed Skating Canada.

The Langley Blades Speed Skating Club relies on volunteers to run the club.  Aside from paying our coach, every other aspect of the Langley Blades is run by volunteer members and/or their families.

To ensure a successful season and to equally distribute volunteer opportunites fairly amongst all members, the Langley Blades require a volunteer cheque of $200 at the beginning of each season, post dated to March 1st of the following year.  To prevent this cheque from being cashed, we ask that members and/or their families volunteer in 3 or more of the following positions throughout the season:

  • Langley Blades executive committee: President, Secretary, Registrar, Treasurer, Interclub Liaison, Equipment Manager, Come Try committee, Fundraising and Corporate Sponsorship committee

  • Website and social media maintenance

  • Group 1 safety mat set-up, Group 3 safety mat take-down

  • Volunteering for and at our Langley Blades Interclub meet

  • Volunteering at other Interclub meets and BCSSA sanctioned events

  • Participating and volunteering for all Langley Blades fundraising events

  • Member on-ice training group helpers

The executive committee is elected at the Langley Blades Annual General Meeting at the end of the season.  If you are interested in being part of the committee, please speak with a current executive member or Contact Us using the link in the left menu.

Not only is volunteering a great way to save money but it also helps you learn about the great sport of speed skating, allows you to get to know our team members and also gives you a chance to meet new 'grown-up' friends!  There is no experience necessary, although if you have specific skills you believe will be helpful to our club, please let us know!
